Mountaineers mixed doubles earns OCAA bronze for second straight year

Mohawk defeats Fleming to earn provincial bronze medal

SAULT STE. MARIE – Mohawk Mountaineers mixed doubles team of Elias Whittington and Ava Andrews captured a bronze medal at the 2024 OCAA Championship.

It is the third consecutive year Mohawk mixed doubles has medalled at the provincial championship and second straight earning the bronze medal.

The Mountaineers found their way to a semi-final game after going 4-2 in round robin play during the first two days of the tournament.

Mohawk would play the Sault-1 Cougars in the semi-final match, losing 8-7 which relegated them to the bronze match. The Mountaineers had jumped out in front of the Cougars 3-1 after two ends and led 6-3 after five ends. Sault would tie it in the sixth end with a three score. Mohawk would regain a one-point advantage after seven, but the Cougars once again tied it after eight ends and scored the winning point in an extra end.

The Mountaineers would matchup versus the Fleming-2 Phoenix in the bronze match, winning 7-0 in five ends. Mohawk would score one each in the first three ends before scoring three in the fourth and an additional one in the fifth.

Andrews was named an OCAA Mixed Doubles First-Team Championship All-Star.

Since 1984-85 Mohawk's mixed doubles program has now captured 12 OCAA medals, six of them being bronze.
