Mixed results for Mohawk on day one of the OCAA Championships

SAULT STE. MARIE – Day one of the OCAA Curling Championships got off to a slow start for the Mohawk Mountaineers, but the men's and mixed doubles teams were able to salvage the day with a win each.

The Mountaineers men's team – who are defending their back-to-back OCAA gold – were given a rude welcoming to the tournament by the Humber Hawks, who defeated Mohawk 5-4. Through the first four ends the Mountaineers had a 3-1 lead, but the Hawks responded with three points in the fifth end to take advantage. While Mohawk tied it at 4-4 in the sixth end, the seventh would go scoreless and Humber secured the victory in the eighth with a single point.

The defending champs then took on the host Sault Cougars. While the Mountaineers secured three points in the second end, the game was tied 3-3 after three. Mohawk would put up another three spot in the fourth. By the seventh end the Cougars had cut into the Mountaineers lead, making it 7-6. Mohawk would get a point in the eighth end for an 8-6 victory.

There are two round robin games remaining for the Mountaineers on day two of the tournament against the Fanshawe Falcons and Confederation Thunderhawks. Two wins will secure a spot into the semi-finals for Mohawk.

For the Mountaineers mixed doubles team the opening match of the tournament was also a heartbreaker. They led the Sault-1 Cougars 5-3 after six ends, but the Cougars answered with two in the seventh to even it up. In the eighth and final end, Sault grabbed the one point for the 6-5 win.

The Mountaineers bounced back big time versus the Falcons, winning 10-1. Fanshawe scored their only point in the first end. Mohawk would score three in the second, two in the third, fifth and sixth ends and add an additional one in the fourth for the victory.

Day two will feature four matches for the Mountaineers mixed doubles team in hopes of finding themselves back in the semi-finals for the third consecutive year.

Mohawk women's team faced two tough opening games, losing 10-2 to the Falcons and 10-3 to the Hawks. The Mountaineers will have rematches versus both those teams on day two of the tournament as they hope to play in the gold medal match on Feb. 10.

Day two (Feb. 9) of the tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m.
