Mountaineers men’s and mixed doubles teams clinch spot into OCAA semifinals

SAULT STE. MARIE – Mohawk Mountaineers men's and mixed doubles curling teams have earned their spot into the semifinals at the OCAA Championships.

The men's team finished round robin play with a 3-1 record after defeating both the Fanshawe Falcons and Confederation Thunderhawks 6-1 on day two of the tournament.

In their match versus the Falcons, the Mountaineers went up 3-0 after three ends. Fanshawe would answer with one in the fourth, but Mohawk would score two in the sixth and one in the seventh to earn the victory.

The Mountaineers in their match versus the Thunderhawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead after one end. Confederation would score one in the second end, but it would be Mohawk the rest of the way for the win.

On the mixed doubles side the Mountaineers started the day with an 11-1 victory over the Fleming-1 Knights, but lost 8-6 to Sault-2 Cougars. The loss meant Mohawk would need to win their final two round robin matches to earn a semi-final spot.

The Mountaineers did just that by defeating an undefeated Humber Hawks team 11-2 and then the Fleming-2 Knights 6-0. Mohawk finished round robin with a 4-2 record.

Mohawk women's curling ended round robin play winless with an 8-2 loss to the Falcons and a 14-0 loss to the Hawks.

Opponents for Mohawk's men's and mixed doubles teams are still to be determined, but both will play at 9 a.m. on Feb. 10.
