HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a 104-80 victory over the Canadore Panthers on Saturday.
Mohawk was led by Kazim Raza (Markham, Ont.), who finished with 24 points and nine rebounds. Milos Mladjan (Hamilton, Ont.) added 12 points and six rebounds off the bench in one of his strongest performances since returning from injury.
The Mountaineers started slowly, holding a narrow 9-7 lead four minutes into the opening quarter, but closed the frame on a run to take a 25-14 advantage.
Mohawk broke the game open in the second quarter, scoring 31 points on 57.9 per cent shooting. Eight different players recorded a basket in the period, and the team assisted on eight of its 11 made field goals. The Mountaineers led by 24 at halftime.
Mohawk pushed its lead to a game-high 34 midway through the third quarter. Canadore responded with an 11-4 run to trim the deficit, but the Mountaineers still led by 24 heading into the fourth.
The Panthers cut the margin to 17 with 3:30 remaining, but Mohawk held firm to secure the 24-point win.
Eltom Adam (Hamilton, Ont.) scored 14 points for the Mountaineers, while Iverson Chong (Oakville, Ont.) added 12.
Mohawk returns to action at home on Jan. 28 when it hosts the Conestoga Condors at 8 p.m.
