HAMILTON, Ont. – Natalie Scholtens (Hamilton, Ont.) of the women's curling team and Dante Richards (Oakville, Ont.) of men's basketball have been named the Mohawk Mountaineers Athletes of the Week for the period of February 16-22.
Natalie Scholtens
Year: 2
Position: Second
Scholtens and the Mohawk women's curling team competed at the 2026 CCAA/Curling Canada Championships this past week after earning bronze at the OCAA Championships. Despite a 2-5 record in round-robin play at nationals, Scholtens' leadership was a key factor in earning the weekly honour.
The lone second-year player on a roster otherwise made up of first-year student-athletes, Scholtens has played a significant role in the program's resurgence over the past two seasons. One year removed from being named an OCAA championship all-star, she has helped lead Mohawk to back-to-back provincial bronze medals.
Dante Richards
Year: 4
Position Guard
Richards was the second-leading scorer for the No. 12 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball team in its OCAA playoff opener against the Algonquin Wolves.
In the 86-79 victory, Richards scored 16 points, knocking down four three-pointers, while adding four assists and two steals. The second-year guard was particularly effective in the first half, hitting three of his triples and scoring 13 points.
Athlete of the Week honours are presented by Booster Juice. Located in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre, Booster Juice is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
