REGINA, Sask. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's and women's curling teams each earned their first win of the tournament Wednesday at the CCAA/Curling Canada Championships, bringing both round-robin records to 1-2.
The Mohawk women opened the day with a 7-3 loss to the Red Deer Queens before rebounding in their second draw with an 8-2 victory over OCAA rival Humber.
Against Red Deer, the Mountaineers fell behind 6-0 after three ends. Mohawk scored one in each of the next three ends to cut into the deficit, but Red Deer added a point in the seventh and the teams shook hands.
In their second game, Mohawk surrendered a single to Humber in the first end before responding with one in the second. The Mountaineers then scored two in both the third and fourth ends, added a single in the fifth and two more in the sixth to build an 8-1 lead. Humber scored once in the seventh, but Mohawk secured the 8-2 win.
On the men's side, the Mountaineers opened the day with a 5-2 win over the NAIT Ooks in a low-scoring contest. The teams blanked the first two ends before Mohawk opened the scoring in the third. After another blank in the fourth, the Mountaineers scored three in the fifth and one in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. NAIT responded with two in the seventh, but Mohawk held on for the victory.
The men closed out Day 2 with an 8-2 loss to the Assiniboine Cougars. Assiniboine scored two in the first end and led 3-1 after three. The Cougars broke the game open with four in the fourth to take a 7-1 advantage. Mohawk scored one in the fifth, and Assiniboine added a single in the sixth to seal the result.
Both teams will look to strengthen their semifinal hopes Thursday. The women face the Niagara Knights at 10 a.m. and the SAIT Trojans at 5 p.m. The men take on the Sault Cougars at 10:30 a.m. before meeting the SAIT Trojans at 5:30 p.m.
