HAMILTON, Ont. – Malak Dahawy (Waterloo, Ont.) of the women's basketball team and Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, Ont.) of men's basketball have been named the Mohawk Mountaineers Athletes of the Week for the period of March 2-8.
Malak Dahawy
Year: 2
Position: Guard
Dahawy reached double digit scoring in Mohawk's two games during the OCAA Women's Basketball Championship weekend, earning Player of the Game honours in the semi-final game. In the weekend opener, Dahawy scored 18 points in 16 minutes played, shooting an efficient seven-of-nine from the field. In the Mountaineers 42-point bronze medal win against the Loyalist Lancers, the second-year scored 15 points on 50 per cent shooting, and added seven rebounds and three steals to her stat line.
Jerry Jr. Mercury
Year: 4
Position: Forward
Mercury was the Player of the Game recipient for Mohawk's semi-final win over St. Clair and received OCAA Championship All-Star honours as the Mountaineers claimed silver. In an 82-80 win that advanced Mohawk to the gold medal game, Mercury had a double-double with 22 points and 12 rebounds, adding three steals. On Saturday in the gold medal game, Mercury scored 12 points with six rebounds and three steals.
Athlete of the Week honours are presented by Booster Juice. Located in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre, Booster Juice is open Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
