Tripp strikes out 12; Mountaineers lose doubleheader

Mohawk can’t string enough runs to beat Seneca

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

(HAMILTON) – Mohawk Mountaineers softball faced two unfortunate losses in a doubleheader against the Seneca Sting, losing 7-4 and 11-9.

Game one: Mohawk 4 – Seneca 7

The opening game remained scoreless until the third inning, where the Mountaineers plated a run off a sacrifice fly by Kerri Smith (Hagersville, ON) and another off a Seneca error to take a 2-0 advantage

The Sting would take the lead in the fourth, scoring three of their own. But in the bottom half, Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, ON) would single home Rachel Lee (Drayton, ON).

Tied at 3-3 in the bottom half of the seventh inning with two outs, Ashlee LaForme (New Cedit, ON) would drive a ball into the outfield for a hit. Trying to turn the play into an inside the park home run, LaForme would be thrown out at home to send the game to extras.

In the top of the eighth, the Sting would score four. The Mountaineers would load the bases in their half, scoring a run on an Ella Busch (Orton, ON) walk, but Mohawk would not be able to score anymore.

Despite the loss, Chantal Tripp (Brampton, ON) pitched a solid eight inning for the Mountaineers, only surrendering three earned runs and striking out a season-high 12.

At the plate, Lupton was two-for-four, scoring once and driving in one.

Game two: Mohawk 9 – Seneca 11

The second game saw Mohawk fall behind Seneca 7-1 through the opening two innings.

While the Sting extended their lead to 8-1 in their half of the fourth, the Mountaineers strung together five of their own to cut the deficit to 8-6.

Despite Mohawk scoring a run in the sixth and seventh, Seneca also added to their score to hold off the Mountaineers

Michaela Walker (Dundas, ON) batted three-for-four for Mohawk, driving home two. Kayla Makowich (Guelph, ON) stayed consistent atop the Mohawk lineup, going two-for-give with three runs batted in and scoring twice. LaForme was also fantastic offensively with a two-for-four game, scoring once and driving home two.

With the season winding down, the Mountaineers will hope to turn their luck versus the Conestoga Condors on Oct. 6 in Kitchener, ON. Doubleheader action begins at 6 p.m.
