Two-win night moves Mountaineers closer to playoff spot

In the hunt for one of three postseason spots, Mohawk sweeps Conestoga

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 (KITCHENER) – Mohawk Mountaineers softball picked up two wins over the Conestoga Condors, 6-1 and 9-6, which significantly helped the Mountaineers in the OCAA playoff race.

Game one: Mohawk 6 – Conestoga 1

It was a slow start for the Mountaineers offensively, falling behind the Condors 1-0 in the second inning.

But the offense began to come alive in the fifth with Kayla Makowich (Guelph, ON) and Kerri Smith (Hagersville, ON)) both driving home a run on singles to give Mohawk a 2-1 lead. It was a lead the Mountaineers would hold onto as they added three runs in the sixth, one of which was scored off a Chantal Tripp (Brampton, ON) double, and then they added an insurance run in the seventh off a Danika Millen (Milton, ON) single.

Two of the six Mohawk runs, which came in the three-run sixth, were scored off a Conestoga error.

The Mountaineers were also impressive defensively only committing one error behind Tripp, who started and went a complete seven innings and struck out four.

Game two: Mohawk 9 – Conestoga 6

Mohawk fell behind early again in this contest with Conestoga scoring five through the opening three innings. The Mountaineers added one in the second off a bases loaded walk, but trailed 5-1 through three.

The offense once again got going in the fifth as Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, ON) doubled, scoring Emma Harker (Brantford, ON). Later Michaela Walker (Dundas, ON) flew out to right field, which scored Makowich, who had advanced to third on the LaForme double.

Then in the sixth, Ella Busch (Orton, ON) hit an RBI single and Millen hit a two-run single to give Mohawk a 6-5 advantage. In the bottom half of the sixth Conestoga did get one back to tie it at 6-6.

The game would go to extras with the Mountaineers scoring three in the top half of the eighth. Makowich grounded out to score Emily Maas (Brantford, ON), Harker then scored on a wild pitch, and to cap it off Millen would triple home LaForme.

Tripp would come in to pitch in relief in the bottom of the eighth and shut the door.

Playoff scenario:

Currently, Mohawk holds an 8-14 record and are sitting fifth in the OCAA with two games left to play. With six teams making the conference playoffs, only three of the positions remain up for grabs.

Fanshawe, currently holding the fourth spot, have a two-point advantage ahead of the Mountaineers and still have four remaining games. Seneca, with one less win than Mohawk, are in the final playoff spot with four left to play as well.

Lambton (six games left), Sheridan (four games remaining) and Conestoga (four games left) are all on the outside looking in but remain in the playoff hunt.

The season will come to close on Oct. 12 when the Mountaineers host the falcons at Mohawk Sports Park. Doubleheader action begins at 6 p.m. and will be streamed on OCAA Live.
