Mohawk softball continues to improve overall roster

HAMILTON – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball is excited to announce the addition of three more recruits to its 2024 roster.

Joining the program is corner infielder Kelsea Peckham (Brantford, ON), outfielder Layla Rowe (Milton, ON) and third base Katie O'Toole (Mississauga, ON).

Head coach Chris McColl spoke once again about the importance of filling deficiencies from last season during this recruiting period.

"We've got a much better-rounded team this year with the addition of this group," McColl said.

Peckham comes to Mohawk out of Pauline Johnson Collegiate & Vocational School and played softball for the Brantford Bobcats. The 5'11 student-athlete also played for the USSSA New York Pride, where Peckham was a member of the 2023 National winning team.

"We're expecting Kelsea to come in and make an immediate impact in her first-year with us," said Mike Smuk, head of softball operations and recruiting for Mohawk. "She comes with a big bat, is an experienced defender and we're excited to see what she can do in the OCAA."

Rowe is a talented center fielder from the Milton Bats softball program. She is a multi-sport athlete having also played flag football, volleyball and field hockey, along with softball, at St. Francis Xavier Secondary.

"Layla is one of the few outfielders I've seen in a long time that has really good footwork," McColl said, adding that Rowe will provide great speed both defensively and on the base paths.

O'Toole is graduating from St. Paul Secondary and played club ball for the Brampton Blazer's.

"Katie will improve our infield exceptionally and will provide both contact and power," McColl said. "She is a great person and will fit into our team mold and the path we're going in."

Peckham will enroll in the Early Childhood Education program at Mohawk beginning in September, while both Rowe and O'Toole will study Police Foundations.
