Mountaineers no-hit Lions; get tested versus Hawks

Hamilton, Ont. - Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball began preseason play on Saturday (Aug. 24), hosting the York Lions and Humber Hawks.

It was an impressive start for the Mountaineers, defeating the Lions 16-0, while holding their opponents to no hits.

Mohawk jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.) led off the inning with a hit by pitch, and Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) drilled a triple to score Makowich.

LaForme was an offensive threat the entire game with three hits, three runs batted in and scoring twice.

Mohawk would add five in the second inning, another seven in the third and added one in the fifth inning.

Makowich scored four times in the contest. Chantal Tripp (Brampton, Ont.) also had herself a three-hit game while driving in four.

Tripp and Maggie Lupton (Binbrook, Ont.) combined for the no-hitter over five innings.

The results flipped for the Mountaineers versus the Hawks, as the latter would win the contest 10-3, highlighted by a five-run second inning.

Mohawk's big hit of the game was LaForme's second triple of the day in the fifth inning, scoring Makowich and Renelle Bourque (Dieppe, NB).

The Mountaineers will wrap-up pre-season on Sept. 5 when they head to St. Catharines, Ont. to play a doubleheader versus the Brock Badgers. Game one will begin at 7 p.m.
