Mountaineers can’t break Shield in four set loss

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – After winning the opening set of the match, the Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team ultimately lost to the Cambrian Shield in four sets, 3-1.
 
Mohawk trailed Cambrian in the first set 13-10, but the Mountaineers stormed back to take a 14-13 lead. After giving up the lead, the Mountaineers scored four straight points for a 18-15 advantage. Mohawk would hold on from their, winning 25-23.
 
In set two it was the Mountaineers with small lead of two points at the midway point. However, the Shield battled back for a 22-18 lead. From there Mohawk scored five of the next six to tie the set at 23-23. But Cambrian put together two points for the 25-23 set win and evening the match at 1-1.
 
Set three remained close with the Shield leading 13-10, but the road team began to pull away from there. Cambrian went up 2-1 in the match with a 25-16 set win.
 
The Shield held advantage of the fourth set throughout until the Mountaineers brought it even at 16-16. It was all momentum for Cambrian as they grew a lead to 23-17. Mohawk cut the deficit down to 24-21 but the rally would stop there for the Shield to win the match 3-1.
 
Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) had a season-high in both kills and digs with 17 each. Thea Spasic (Hamilton, Ont.) provided 14 kills. Additionally, on the defensive end Emma Becke (Burlington, Ont.) had 16 digs and Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) dug the ball 13 times. Megan Battersby from the setter position had a season-high 40 assists.
 
Mohawk concludes the home portion of their 2024-25 schedule as they'll be on the road for their final two matches. Their next matchup will be January 30 when they travel to Toronto, Ont. to play the No. 4 nationally ranked Humber Hawks, with the match beginning at 6 p.m.
