HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers and Humber Hawks made history Tuesday night, playing in the first-ever lacrosse sixes game between two Canadian collegiate teams. While the contest wasn't officially league-sanctioned, it showcased both programs' commitment to developing and promoting the sport at the collegiate level.
The Mountaineers came out on top, defeating the Hawks 16-9.
Humber had an early chance to open the scoring and record the program's first-ever goal, but a breakaway attempt missed wide of the net. Mohawk settled in and struck first 4:45 into the opening quarter, sparking a run of five unanswered goals.
After Humber scored twice in response, the Mountaineers answered with six of the next seven to take an 11-3 lead at halftime.
Mohawk extended its advantage to 14-4 early in the second half, but Humber found momentum late, scoring five of the final seven goals. Despite the late push, the Mountaineers held firm to secure the historic win.
Dawson Brown (Hamilton, Ont.) and Thomas Crossley (Milton, Ont.) led the way for Mohawk with three goals apiece. Duncan Carte (Hamilton, Ont.), Jake Heinbuck (Brantford, Ont.) and Shane Simioni (Burlington, Ont.) each scored twice, while Jack Biro (Waterford, Ont.), Tayler Mara (Sarnia, Ont.), Thomas-James Richardson-Bonar (Hamilton, Ont.) and Justin Vidal (Hamilton, Ont.) added singles.
Mohawk will continue its non-league schedule on Oct. 10 when it hosts the U.S. Virgin Islands U22 lacrosse sixes team. The game is set for 6:30 p.m. at Durham College in Oshawa, Ont.
