Mountaineers can’t close the door, fall to Royals in five sets

Box Score ANCASTER, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's volleyball team held a 2-1 set lead over the Redeemer Royals but couldn't finish the job, falling 3-2 on Wednesday night.

Mohawk trailed for much of the opening set but stayed close enough to rally for a 25-23 win. After falling behind 19-14, the Mountaineers clawed back to take their first lead at 23-22 and closed out the set with the final two points.

In the second, Mohawk dug itself an early 5-0 hole and never fully recovered. Redeemer built its advantage to 19-9 before taking the set 25-18.

The Mountaineers responded in the third, controlling play throughout. After an 8-6 lead, they scored four straight points and later pulled ahead by as many as nine before sealing the set 25-19.

Set four saw Mohawk jump out to a 3-0 lead, but Redeemer quickly evened things up. The Royals went ahead 19-15 and extended the match with a 25-17 victory.

The deciding fifth set slipped away early for Mohawk, which fell behind 6-1 and trailed 8-2 at the side switch. The Royals maintained momentum to take the set 15-5 and the match.

Olivia Rosewell (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers with 11 kills and 12 digs. Kyrah Cameron (Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.) and Sofia Spoljar (Hamilton, Ont.) both stepped up defensively with a team-high 13 digs each.

The Mountaineers will have more than a week off before returning to action Nov. 15, when they host the Fanshawe Falcons at 6 p.m.
