Mountaineers men’s curling perfect in round robin play; women get first win

LETHBRIDGE, AB – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling team went undefeated in round robin play at the 2025 CCAA Curling Canada Championships, earning the number one seed heading into the semi-finals. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers women's team picked up their first win on the final day of round robin play.

The Mohawk men's team finished a perfect 7-0 through the first four days of the championship, bringing their combined record to 19-2 in round robin play across the last three CCAA Championships.

In their opening game on day four, the Mountaineers defeated the RSEQ conference representatives 7-3. Mohawk took a 3-0 lead after the first two ends, but RSEQ responded with one point each in the third and fourth ends to narrow the gap to 3-2. After trading one point in both the fifth and sixth ends, the Mountaineers sealed the win with three points in the seventh.

In their final round robin match, Mohawk faced the SAIT Trojans, a team they had struggled against in the past, having lost all three matchups dating back to the 2023 CCAA Championships. This time, however, the Mountaineers came out on top with a dominant 9-3 victory. After falling behind 1-0 after the first end, Mohawk bounced back with two points in the second, one in the third, and two more in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead. Though the Trojans responded with a two-point fifth end, Mohawk responded with a clutch four-point shot in the sixth to secure the win as SAIT conceded after the sixth end.

The Mountaineers will now compete in the CCAA Semi-Final on February 28 at 11:30 a.m. against the Sault Cougars. Medal games will follow at 4:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Mountaineers women's team secured a 7-3 victory over the Humber Hawks for their first win of the bonspiel. The Mountaineers had a strong three-point second end and led 5-0 after three ends. Humber managed to score one in the fourth, and after Mohawk responded with one of their own in the fifth, the Hawks added single points in the sixth and seventh to bring the Mountaineers' lead to 6-3. Mohawk closed out the game with a point in the final end to seal the win.

In their last round robin game, the Mountaineers fell to the SAIT Trojans 10-4. Mohawk trailed 2-1 after the second end but rallied to take a 4-2 lead with a three-point third end. However, SAIT seized control of the game in the fourth end with five points, pulling ahead 7-4. The Trojans added one point in each of the following three ends to give Mohawk the loss.

The Mohawk women's team finishes the 2025 CCAA Curling Canada Championships with a 1-6 round robin record and did not qualify for the semi-finals.
