Men’s Curling open OCAA Championships with two wins; Mixed Doubles split games

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's curling team began their quest for a fourth straight provincial gold on Wednesday when the 2025 OCAA Championships kicked off.

Mohawk began the day with a 6-2 win over the Durham Lords and added another victory later, defeating the Fleming Phoenix 6-1.

The Mountaineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead after two ends versus the Lords. Although Durham fought back, scoring one in the third and one in the fourth to make it 3-2, Mohawk sealed the win after adding two in the sixth.

Against the Phoenix, Mohawk scored two points in the first, second and fourth ends, while the Phoenix scored their lone point in the third.

Mohawk's mixed doubles team also began competition play Wednesday. The Mountaineers won their tournament opener 11-6 over the Lords, but fell 6-5 to the Sault Cougars-2.

The Mountaineers fell behind 1-0 after one end to the Lords, but bounced back with four points in the second end. Durham regained the lead with two points in the third and fourth ends, but Mohawk got back the lead with three in the fifth end as they held a 7-5 advantage. The Lords then cut the deficit in half after the sixth end, however that is all the Mountaineers would surrender as they scored three in the seventh and one in the eighth for the win.

In game two of the day, Mohawk and Sault-2 traded single points in the first four ends to be tied 2-2. The Cougars took the lead after five, going up 4-2. In the sixth end the Mountaineers scored one to trail 4-3, but the Cougars added two of their own in the seventh to hold a 6-3 advantage. Mohawk's comeback fell short in the eighth end as they could only put up two, falling one shy of extending the game.

Day two of the OCAA Championships continues on Thursday at 9 a.m. at Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club. This will include the Mohawk women's team taking the ice for the first time. The women will play two games on Thursday as will the men, while the mixed doubles team will play once.
