Mountaineers curling teams go undefeated on day 2 of OCAA Championships

HAMILTON, Ont. ­– The Mohawk Mountaineers curling teams achieved a perfect record on day two of the OCAA Championships, with both the women's and men's teams going 2-0 and the mixed doubles squad securing their lone victory.  
 
For the Mountaineers women's team, day two marked their first round of play. They started with an 8-0 win over the Confederation Thunderhawks, followed by an 8-1 victory against the Fleming Phoenix. Against Confederation, Mohawk led 3-0 after two ends, adding two points each in the third and fourth ends, then a single point in the fifth to seal the win. In their match against Fleming, Mohawk scored two in the opening end, with the Phoenix responding with one in the second to make it 2-1. The Mountaineers then added two in the third, one in the fourth, and three in the fifth for the victory.
 
The mixed doubles team improved to 2-1 overall with a commanding 10-2 win over the Fanshawe Falcons. Mohawk quickly took a 3-0 lead in the first end. After Fanshawe scored one in the second, the Mountaineers responded with two in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth, extending their lead to 10-1. The Falcons added one more point in the sixth but ultimately conceded, giving Mohawk the win.
 
The men's team improved their tournament round robin record to 4-0 with an 8-1 win over the Sault Cougars and a dominant 13-0 defeat of the Confederation Thunderhawks. The Mountaineers controlled both games from the start, leading 8-0 against Sault after three ends. The Cougars scored their only point in the fourth end before conceding the match. Against Confederation, Mohawk opened with five in the first end, followed by four in the second, one in the third, and three in the fourth to secure the victory.
 
Day three of the OCAA Championships will take place Friday with the first of four draws beginning at 9 a.m., with all the action taking place at Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club.
