All three Mountaineer curling teams secure semi-final spot

HAMILTON, Ont. – All three Mohawk Mountaineers curling teams secured their spot in the OCAA semi-finals in their respective competitions after the final day of round robin play on Saturday.
 
The Mohawk men's team finished second in their division with a 6-1 record, the women's team solidified the third seed with a 3-2 record, and mixed doubles also finished third at 5-2.
 
In their final round robin game, the Mountaineers men's team defeated the Niagara Knights 7-1. Mohawk scored two in the first end and one in the second for a 3-0 lead. After the Knights scored one in the third, the Mountaineers scored four in the fourth end to secure the victory.
 
The women's team on Saturday split their final two round robin games with an 8-1 loss to the Fanshawe Falcons and a 6-5 win over the Niagara Knights. In their game versus Fanshawe, Mohawk fell behind 6-0 after the third end. The Mountaineers scored their one in the fourth, but surrendered two in the fifth and conceded to the Falcons. Mohawk fell behind Niagara 6-0 in the first three ends, but stormed back with one in the fourth, fifth and sixth ends, and then tied it up in the sixth. The Mountaineers would score one in the eighth to pickup the win.
 
In mixed doubles action, Mohawk won 9-5 over the Humber Hawks and lost 9-3 to the Sault-1 Cougars. The Mountaineers built a 3-0 lead on the Hawks after three ends. Humber scored one in the fourth, but Mohawk had a four score fifth end and added one more in the sixth to lead 8-1. The Hawks made it a game with four points in the seventh end, but the Mountaineers scored one in the eighth for the win. In their game versus Sault-1, Mohawk fell behind 6-0 after three ends. The Mountaineer scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-3, but the Cougars scored three in the sixth, leading to the Mountaineers conceding.
 
Mohawk's men's team will play their semi-final game at 9 a.m. on Sunday versus the Sault Cougars, while the women will also play at 9 a.m. versus the Humber Hawks. The Mountaineers mixed doubles team will play their semi-final game at 12:30 p.m. versus the Sault-2 Cougars.
