Mountaineers curling teams earn two wins each at home bonspiel

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's and women's curling teams each posted 2-1 records at the Mohawk Bonspiel on Saturday at Dundas Valley Golf and Curling Club.

The men opened play with a 6-2 win over the Niagara Knights. Mohawk took a 1-0 lead in the first end before Niagara responded to tie the game in the second. The Mountaineers scored three in the third end and carried a 4-2 advantage after five, then added two more in the sixth to secure the victory.

Mohawk followed with a narrow 5-4 win over the Durham Lords. After trailing 2-0 through two ends, the Mountaineers built a 4-2 lead after five. Durham drew even with a pair in the sixth, but Mohawk claimed a single point in the seventh and final end to seal the win.

In their final match, the Mountaineers dropped a 6-3 decision to the Humber Hawks. Mohawk led 2-1 after three ends before Humber moved ahead 3-2 in the fourth. The Mountaineers tied the game in the fifth, but the Hawks scored three in the sixth leading to the two teams shaking.

On the women's side, Mohawk opened the day with a 5-4 victory over the Knights. After scoring one in the first end, the Mountaineers allowed Niagara to pick up one point in each of the next three ends to trail 3-1. Mohawk responded with four points in the fifth end to take the lead and held on after Niagara added one in the sixth.

The Mountaineers earned their second win in decisive fashion, defeating the Durham Lords 10-2. Mohawk scored two in the first end, four in the third, and added two points in both the fifth and sixth ends.

Mohawk closed the bonspiel with a 7-1 loss to Humber, with the Mountaineers' lone point coming in the second end.

Both teams now turn their attention to the OCAA Championship, scheduled for Feb. 4–8 at the Dixie Curling Club in Mississauga, Ont.
