Mountaineers curling teams drop opening draws at CCAA Championships

REGINA, Sask. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's and women's curling teams opened the 2026 CCAA/Curling Canada Championships with losses on Tuesday.

Each team played one draw on the opening day. The Mohawk men fell 11-3 to the Gaillards du Cégep de l'Abitibi-Témiscamingue (RSEQ), while the women lost 9-4 to the Concordia Thunder (ACAC).

On the men's side, Mohawk fell behind 3-0 in the first end. The Mountaineers picked up a single in the second, but allowed two more in the third to trail 5-1. Mohawk cut the deficit in half with two points in the fourth, before surrendering six in the fifth. The teams shook hands after five ends.

The women kept their game close until the eighth end. Mohawk trailed 2-0 after two ends and scored one in the third. Concordia restored its two-point edge in the fourth, but the Mountaineers responded with two in the fifth to even the score at 3-3. The Thunder took control with two in the sixth, and Mohawk forced an eighth end with a single in the seventh. Concordia then scored four in the final end to seal the win.

Action resumes Wednesday with the women facing the Red Deer Queens and the men taking on the NAIT Ooks at 10:30 a.m. The second draw begins at 5:30 p.m., with the women playing the Humber Hawks and the men meeting the Assiniboine Cougars.
