MISSISSAUGA, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's and men's curling teams opened play at the OCAA Championships on Wednesday with victories over the Confederation Thunderhawks at the Dixie Curling Centre.
The Mountaineers women built an early lead, going up 8-2 after four ends. Confederation answered with three points in both the fifth and sixth ends to tie the match at 8-8.
Mohawk regained the lead with two in the seventh end and sealed the win in the eighth, allowing one, to earn a 10-9 victory.
The men's match was more one-sided, as Mohawk defeated Confederation 13-3.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two ends and held a 6-3 advantage through five. Mohawk scored six in the sixth end and forced a concession in the seventh.
Day 2 of the tournament continues Feb. 5, with both teams opening against the Humber Hawks at 10 a.m. The Mountaineers will then face the Durham Lords at 2:30 p.m.
