The hot shooting from Kyra Guzylak-Messam helped power the Mountaineers women's basketball team to a 62-43 win over the Fanshawe Falcons.

Head coach Hali Burns referred to Guzylak-Messam as Mohawk's most valuable player for the game. The first-year Hamilton guard came off the bench to score 18 points on six three's and shot 60 per cent from beyond the arc.

In the first quarter, both offences started slow and the Falcons led 11-8.

The second quarter was the difference as Guzylak-Messam knocked down four of her six three's for the game and Mohawk exploded for 29 points. Fanshawe was held to just six points in the quarter as the Mountaineers led 27-17 at half.

"We did really well putting defensive pressure on Fanshawe and having patience and executing our offence," said Burns.

Mohawk's offence made over 33 per cent of their shots compared to the Falcons 22.6 per cent.

The Mountaineers also scored 19 points off of turnovers and the bench contributed 33 points.

Celina Chung collected nine rebounds for Mohawk to go along with five points, four assists, three steals and two blocks. Both Brooke Turner and Rachel Guanzon added nine points.

Mohawk wraps up exhibition play on Dec. 4 at Sheridan with tip-off at 1 p.m.
