Mountaineers defeat Lions behind Calura's career-high

Box Score
By: Severn Zieman

A 33-point third quarter helped Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball erase a first half deficit to defeat the Lambton Lions 95-82.

The Lions would head into halftime with a 10-point lead, but the Mountaineers came out of the locker room with a different mindset both offensively and defensively, holding Lambton to 13-points in the third.

Head coach Brian Jonker called the team's first half "sluggish" but attributed the start to the team's "long bus ride and sitting around for four hours (before the game)".

As a team Mohawk still shot 47.3 per cent from the field and made it to the free throw line 26 times, making only 15.

Cale Calura (Hamilton, ON) led the Mountaineers with a career-high 22 and Jerry Jr. Mercury (Scarborough, ON) added a double double of 21 points and 11 rebounds. Daniel Graham (Hamilton, ON) and Rommel Calura (Hamilton, ON) contributed 18 and 15, respectively.

"Cale and Jerry were awesome in the third quarter," Jonker said. "Jerry has been a huge piece for us in all areas but especially rebounding and defense."

Mohawk will look to keep their winning ways going on Nov. 13 with they travel to Windsor, ON to play the St. Clair Saints at 3 p.m.
