Mountaineers contain Bruins in four set win

Box Score HAMILTON – It was a tightly contested match, but Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball pulled through with a 3-1 (35-33, 25-21, 22-25, 25-23) win.
 
The first set was as back and forth as it could get with 13 different set point opportunities for the two teams combined. Sheridan had eight of the set point chances.
 
At 24-22 the Bruins had their first opportunity at finishing the set, but the Mountaineers rallied for two to keep it going. Sheridan would get four more opportunities to finish off the set but the Mountaineers kept battling to eventually win 35-33.
 
In the second set Mohawk trailed 18-15, but they went on a 5-2 run to get it tied up. At 21-21 the Mountaineers would put forward four straight points before the Bruins responded with one  of their own. Mohawk would close the door on the next play.
 
Set number three had the Mountaineers in the lead at 16-12 but the Bruins began responding after a timeout. Sheridan took the lead at 20-19 which then resulted in back-and-forth play. Mohawk called a timeout down 24-22 but could not rally back.
 
The Mountaineers would close it out in set four, however it was the Bruins who were out in front originally. Sheridan's lead would get as high as four at 14-10 but Mohawk would respond with four straight to force a timeout.
 
While the Bruins would regain a three-point advantage, the Mountaineers would keep fighting back. The two would continue to trade points before Mohawk pushed towards victory.
 
Eric Rorke (Cambridge, ON) set a career-high with 15 kills, and Dean Zicari (Burlington, ON) and Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, ON) both had nine kills. Noah Bouchard (Oakville, ON), who was named CCAA Athlete of the Week, set his own career-high for the second consecutive week with 40 assists.
 
The Mountaineers will be on the road for their next match when they take on the Niagara Knights on Nov. 25 at 3 p.m.
