2024-25 Season Preview: Mountaineers Women’s Basketball

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team will eye a medal game this season after falling one win shy a year ago.

Mohawk had one of its best turnarounds in 2023-24, going from five wins the season before to 12. They reached the OCAA quarter-final round, the furthest playoff run since 2017-18.

In preseason action ahead of the 2024-25 season, the Mountaineers played to a 3-3 record. The three losses came versus OUA opponents, while all three victories came in Quebec to closeout exhibition.

The team will look a bit different with three of five starters from last season graduated, but the newest additions will look to fill those shoes.

Mihai Raducanu, entering year three as head coach, has always emphasized culture with his team and that will not be changing this season.

"We're very excited to kick-off our season with a squad that prioritizes love for each other and are constantly growing as one," said Raducanu. "All of our players returning and new additions, are going to be fun to watch, but the most exciting thing people will see is how we all play together and fuel each other with positivity."

Key Returning Players:
  • Maddie Anderson (Guard): The Mohawk leader for threes made a season ago, Anderson's offense on top of her leadership on and off the court are invaluable assets. The fourth-year guard was second for the Mountaineers in scoring with 13.3 points per game. In a preseason game versus the Dawson Blues, Anderson had 30 points, seven made threes and eight rebounds.
  • Angong Jacob (Guard): In 2023-24, Jacob finished the season ninth in the OCAA in scoring per game. She has the ability to score at the rim, shoot the midrange and step back for the three. Jacob's best preseason performance came versus the Vanier Cheetahs, where she scored 37 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
  • Tiffany Williams (Center): Named to the OCAA All-Rookie Team last season, Williams will be key to the Mohawk frontcourt both offensively and defensively. The second-year will be relied on heavily for rebounds as well.
Key Additions:
  • Kendra Oliver (Forward): After one season away from the OCAA, Oliver is back. A former CCAA All-Canadian and OCAA East Division Player of the Year, the veteran forward will have a big role for the Mountaineers that will include scoring, defending, rebounding and at times brining the ball up in the backcourt. In three preseason games in Quebec, Oliver averaged 14.3 points and 16.3 rebounds.
  • Malak Dahawy (Guard): A veteran addition, Dahawy will add length to the Mohawk backcourt. Despite being an older player, this will be her first collegiate season as she looks to develop her untapped potential.
  • Anna Deliyannis (Forward): The Mountaineers only true freshman addition, Deliyannis comes from the Niagara JUEL prep program. She will be relied on for her energy, rebounding and work ethic.
Mohawk will begin their 18-game season at home on Oct. 19 when they host the Fanshawe Falcons. Tip-off takes place at 1 p.m.
