Playoff Preview: No. 2 Mountaineers host Lions in clash of recent champions

HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 2 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team continues its OCAA playoff run at home Saturday, hosting the Lambton Lions in a quarterfinal matchup featuring the conference's two most recent champions.

Mohawk captured the title last season, while Lambton won the championship the year prior, setting up a high-stakes postseason meeting between familiar contenders.

PLAYOFF RECAP
The Mountaineers advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a default win in the qualifying round. Mohawk, which finished first in the OCAA West Division with a 15-1 record, did not play on the opening weekend of the conference playoffs.

Mohawk's last game action came Feb. 11, when it closed the regular season with a 69-49 victory over the Fanshawe Falcons.

The Lions, seeded fourth in the West Division, moved on with an 82-73 road win over the East Division's foruth-seeded George Brown Huskies. Lambton trailed by one at halftime but took the lead early in the third quarter. The Huskies tied the game with under four minutes remaining, but the Lions held on to secure the win.

Lambton posted an 8-8 regular-season record, highlighted by a win over Fanshawe and close losses to both Mohawk and Humber.

HISTORICAL MATCHUP
Mohawk has won the past four meetings between the teams, all in regular-season play over the last two years. Before that, Lambton had won eight of nine previous matchups.

This season, Mohawk opened the series with a 78-40 home victory in November. The teams met again in January at Lambton, where the Mountaineers rallied from a 16-point deficit to win 62-55.

The programs last met in the playoffs in the 2015-16 quarterfinals, with Mohawk advancing. Saturday's game marks the third postseason meeting between the teams.
