Mountaineers grab first win of the season at home

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – In their home opener of the 2024-25 season, the Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team got their first win of the season, defeating the Conestoga Condors 3-1 (29-27, 21-25, 26-24, 27-25).

The victory snaps an early season two-game losing streak for Mohawk.

It was a close matchup between the two teams as three of four sets needed extra play to be decided.

In the first set the Mountaineers led 20-13, but the Condors scored four in a row to cut the lead to three. Then with a 24-20 set point advantage, Mohawk surrendered four straight, bringing the set even at 24-24. The Mountaineers then led 25-24, 26-25 and 27-26 before they finally closed the door after a 27-27 tie.

Set two was close again until Conestoga went up 18-15. Then the Condors biggest lead of five came at 24-19. While Mohawk was able to string together two-points, Conestoga closed the door to bring the match even at 1-1.

In the third set the Mountaineers built some breathing room with a 15-11 advantage, but the Condors crawled back again to bring the set to a tie at 22-22. After trading points once again, Mohawk was able to capitalize on Conestoga mistakes to win the set.

Set four was also filled with drama as well. The Mountaineers jumped out to a 3-0 lead and later grow that advantage to four at 12-8. Conestoga then tied it at 13 apiece. Mohawk would get their four-point lead back at 19-15 which forced a Condors timeout. Down 24-21 Conestoga would not got away quietly as they scored three straight and eventually took a 25-24 lead. The Mountaineers scored three straight to finally close the door and win the match.

Brecken Morrison (Stouffville, Ont.) led Mohawk's offense with 14 kills and Alex Jurak (St. Catharines, Ont.) provided 13 kills. Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) added 10 kills

The Mountaineers will host the Niagara Knights next on Oct. 30 with game time scheduled for 8 p.m.
