Mountaineers lose close contest to No. 4 Hawks

Box Score HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team played four close sets versus the No. 4 nationally ranked Humber Hawks, ultimately losing 3-1 (25-17, 26-28, 24-26, 22-25).

In the first set the two teams played a tight contest until the Mountaineers broke through for a 17-11 lead. Momentum remained with Mohawk for a set one victory.

Set two saw the Mountaineers hold a small advantage throughout, which extended to a 23-19 lead. The Hawk quickly turned the set around to bring it even 23-23. Mohawk held set point at 24-23, then Humber scored two straight for a 25-24 set advantage. Set point then returned to the Mountaineers at 26-25, but the Hawks answered with three consecutive to even the match 1-1.

Humber jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the third set. Mohawk stormed back to tie the set up at 22-22. Trailing 24-23, the Mountaineers evened the set again to force extra play, but the Hawks ended the set with two straight points.

With the match on the line in the fourth set, Mohawk hung around for the entirety of it and eventually took a 19-17 lead to force a Humber timeout. The Mountaineers then held a 21-17, but the Hawks went on a run to score eight of the next nine points to end the match.

Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) led Mohawk with 12 kills. Turner Neame (Hamilton, Ont.) played a solid defensive game with 14 digs.

The Mountaineers will be back in the David Braley Athletic and Recreation Centre for their next match when they host the St. Clair Saints on Nov. 22 at 8 p.m.
