Mercury and Chong named OCAA men's basketball all-stars

Chong receives All-Rookie honour

HAMILTON - Jerry Jr. Mercury and Iverson Chong from Mohawk Mountaineers men's basketball have been named OCAA All-Stars for the 2023-24 season.

Mercury (Scarborough, ON) was named to the west division first-team, while Chong (Oakville, ON) earned second-team honours and was named to the all-rookie team.

Appearing in 11 games, Mercury finished the season averaging a double-double with 22.6 points and 10.4 rebounds. The Mohawk forward is one of three OCAA athletes to end the season averaging double digits in both points and rebounds, posting a total of six double-doubles.

Despite missing seven games due to a second half injury, Mercury still finished the season seventh in the OCAA in free throws made, 10^th in both defensive and total rebounds, and 14^th in the total points.

This is the second consecutive year Mercury has been named an OCAA all-star.

In his first season with the Mountaineers, Chong has excelled both as a starter and in a sixth man role, appearing in 17 games and starting eight of them. A season highlighted by a 48-point performance where Chong knocked down 11 threes, the guard averaged 14.1 points per game on 48 per cent shooting.

Chong's 42.9 three-point percentage ranked seventh in the OCAA and he was tenth in total threes with 36 made.

Mohawk advanced to the OCAA quarter-finals this past weekend with a 98-96 victory over the Loyalist Lancers. They will now head to Toronto on Feb. 24 to play the George Brown Huskies at 5 p.m.
