WINDSOR, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers men's volleyball team is off to its best start since the 2021-22 season after defeating the St. Clair Saints 3-1 on Saturday. The win improves Mohawk's record to 3-1 through four matches this season.
In the opening set, the Mountaineers rallied from a 13-8 deficit to tie the score at 16-16. With the set even at 17-17, Mohawk scored six of the next seven points to take it 25-20.
The second set followed a similar pattern, with Mohawk again battling back from an early 8-4 deficit to even things at 14-14. The Mountaineers gained a slight edge down the stretch and held off the Saints to close out the set 25-23.
Set three was tightly contested, with neither side able to pull away. Mohawk reached match point at 24-23, but St. Clair responded with three straight points to take the set 26-24 and extend the match.
In the fourth, Mohawk jumped ahead 12-9 to force a St. Clair timeout. The Saints regrouped to tie the score at 15-15, but the Mountaineers answered with three straight points to regain control. Mohawk maintained its lead to seal the set 25-20 and the match victory.
Josh Taylor (Hamilton, Ont.) led the Mountaineers offensively with 11 kills, while Dean Zicari (Burlington, Ont.) anchored the defence with 10 digs.
Mohawk will stay on the road for its next match, visiting the Redeemer Royals for the second time this season on Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. in Ancaster, Ont.
