Mountaineers softball officially signs five recruits to 2025 roster

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball head coach Chris McColl has officially announced the addition of five new recruits to the program ahead of the 2025 season.

Joining the Mountaineers are Tahlia Henry (Grand Valley, Ont.), Zoey Lorentz (Kitchener, Ont.), Madison Babcock (Lindsay, Ont.), Emma Purnell (Grimsby, Ont.) and Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.). These five student-athletes join Grace Purdy, who signed with the team back in December, bringing the Mountaineers' 2025 recruiting class to six.

Henry, a versatile athlete capable of playing anywhere on the diamond, recently earned a gold medal at the 2024 Eastern Championships, where she was also named Most Valuable Player.

"Tahlia is a great athlete and plays the game the right way," said McColl. "She has an exceptional work ethic, is a fierce competitor, and an excellent teammate."

Lorentz, a product of the UTM Impact softball program, will primarily support Mohawk behind the plate and at third base, while also providing flexibility across the field.

"Zoey's passion for the game and desire to play hard will be an asset to the program and help push this team to the next level," said McColl.

Babcock, who played club softball for the Oshawa Lady B's, brings depth to the Mountaineers' infield and could contribute as a pitcher.

"Madison has the versatility to play multiple positions and can also spend some time on the mound," McColl noted. "She's a competitor with a desire to battle every day. Her personality and work ethic will strengthen our team and its dynamics."

Purnell, most recently with the Mississauga Southwest Hurricanes, brings valuable experience from both Ontario and U.S. competition. She will contribute on the mound and at first base.

"Emma is a strong athlete with a great work ethic and eagerness to improve," said McColl. "She's a crafty right-handed pitcher with the ability to keep hitters off balance and will be a key part of our pitching staff."

Fry, a catcher and outfielder from the Oakville Angels, is known for her composure and versatility on the field.

"Genevieve is a strong, smart, and calm presence behind the plate who will make our pitching staff better," said McColl. "She's versatile enough to play almost any position with confidence. Her upbeat personality and team-first mentality add to an already exceptional group of athletes."

"This group of athletes is going to make an immediate impact and provide significant depth to our roster," McColl added. "They'll play an integral role in the future and continued growth of the Mohawk softball program."

Academically, Henry and Lorentz will enter the Police Foundation program, Babcock will study in the Personal Support Worker program, Purnell will pursue Early Childhood Education, and Fry will enter the Nursing program.
