Mountaineers softball adds five more recruits for 2025 season

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball will feature plenty of fresh faces in 2025, as head coach Chris McColl has announced the program's second round of summer recruits, bringing the total number of new additions to 10.

Officially joining the Mountaineers are Jazlynne Martin (Six Nations), Taylor McCrae (Milton, Ont.), Nikki Parpotta (Brantford, Ont.), Ashka Pieris-Stevens (Milton, Ont.) and Blythe Hynds (Mississauga, Ont.).

Martin brings collegiate experience to the roster, having played one season in the NJCAA with Onondaga Community College and half a season at the NCAA Division II level with D'Youville University. In 2022, the corner infielder appeared in 33 games for Onondaga, hitting .270 with nine extra-base hits, 16 RBIs and 17 walks.

"Jazzy joins us after a short break following her US college career," said McColl. "She's a great athlete who can play anywhere on the diamond with confidence. Her athleticism, excellent softball IQ and previous experience will help her shine in the OCAA."

McCrae arrives at Mohawk as a dual-sport athlete from Milton District High School. In 2023, she was named team MVP for volleyball and earned the school's Female Athlete of the Year award. In her senior year, she captained the softball team. McCrae brings versatility with the ability to play both corner infield and catcher.

"Taylor is a powerful and dynamic young athlete joining us out of the Oakville Angels organization," said McColl. "She strengthens an already solid catching group, adds depth in the infield, and brings a strong bat with home run potential."

Parpotta is the second transfer in this recruiting group, having played the 2024 season with the Sheridan College Bruins. In nine games, she hit .321 with six RBIs. She also has club experience with the Brantford Bobcats and Milton Bats.

"Nikki is a leader and the ultimate teammate, which will be invaluable with this young group of exceptional athletes," said McColl. "She also provides us depth at the corners and behind the plate, if needed."

Pieris-Stevens is a late add to the Mountaineer group. She brings experience having played club with the Milton Bats and helped lead Bishop Reding Catholic Secondary School to back-to-back OFSAA podium finishes in slow pitch – third place in 2024 and second in 2025.

"Ashka is a good athlete with a great softball IQ," said McColl. "She's a focused and fierce competitor who adds to the lineup with a strong bat and the versatility to play multiple positions."

Hynds, a product of the Brampton Blazers program, will offer depth at third base and in the outfield.

"Blythe is a quick and versatile athlete," said McColl. "She can play both the infield and outfield with confidence. Her speed will be a huge asset to the program both offensively and defensively."

Academically, Martin will enroll in Child and Youth Care, McCrae and Pieris-Stevens will focus on Police Foundations, Parpotta will study Protection, Security and Investigation, and Hynds will study Advertising and Marketing Communications.

Mohawk softball will open their 2025 campaign with a mini exhibition tournament on August 23-24 at Rosedale Park in Hamilton. The OCAA regular season begins September 6, when Mohawk visits the Fanshawe Falcons in London, Ont., with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled for 12 p.m.
