Mountaineers softball swept in season opening doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LONDON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's softball team opened the OCAA season with a pair of losses, dropping both ends of a doubleheader to the Fanshawe Falcons on Saturday.

The Falcons took the opener 8-6 before walking off the Mountaineers 8-7 in the nightcap.

In Game one, Fanshawe built an early 4-0 lead through two innings. Mohawk responded with a run in the fourth and tied the game in the sixth, highlighted by an RBI single from Kayla Makowich (Guelph, Ont.).

Fanshawe answered with four runs in the bottom half of the sixth. Genevieve Fry (Beamsville, Ont.) cut into the deficit with a solo home run in the seventh before Ashlee LaForme (New Credit, Ont.) added an RBI single. The rally fell short.

Mohawk managed six hits in the opener, with Ashka Pieris-Stevens (Milton, Ont.) leading the way with a two-for-two performance and a walk.

In Game two, LaForme drove in the game's first run with a double, but Fanshawe answered with two in the bottom of the inning. Rachel Lee (Drayton, Ont.) tied the contest in the second with a solo shot.

The Mountaineers briefly regained the lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Fry, but the Falcons pushed across three runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth for a 6-3 advantage.

Mohawk stormed back with a four-run sixth inning to go ahead 7-6. A wild pitch in the bottom half tied it, and Fanshawe walked it off in the seventh with a bases-loaded single.

Lee, LaForme, Lorentz and Lupton all collected two hits in the loss.

The Mountaineers return to action Sept. 11 when they host the Humber Hawks for a doubleheader at Mohawk Sports Park Diamond 1. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
