Playoff Preview: Mountaineers battle Grizzlies in OCAA Quarterfinals

HAMILTON, Ont. – The Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team is back in the OCAA Quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. They will head to Barrie, Ont., to face the Georgian Grizzlies on February 22.

In 2023-24, the Mountaineers' season ended in the quarterfinals after a 66-58 loss to the Algonquin Wolves. Mohawk's last appearance in the semi-finals came in the 2017-18 season.

The Matchup:

The Mountaineers secured their spot in the quarterfinals with a 90-61 victory over the Centennial Colts in the OCAA Qualifying Round last week. Despite holding only a two-point lead at halftime, Mohawk powered through with a dominant 28-6 run in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Kendra Oliver (Ajax, Ont.) led the way with a double-double of 19 points and 20 rebounds. Angong Jacob (Calgary, AB) was close to a double-double as well, contributing 23 points and nine rebounds. Donna-Marie Borja (Calgary, AB) nearly achieved a triple-double, finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists.

Georgian, the OCAA East Division's second seed, advanced after a 66-60 win over the Redeemer Royals. Like Mohawk, the Grizzlies relied on a strong fourth-quarter performance to secure their place in the quarterfinals.

Last Meeting:

This will be the first time in OCAA Playoff history that the Mountaineers and Grizzlies will meet.

However, the two teams did face off in an exhibition game on January 4 in Barrie, Ont., with Mohawk coming out on top 66-58.
