Playoff Preview: No. 15 Mountaineers battle Falcons for spot in OCAA Semi-Finals

HAMILTON, Ont. – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team will compete in the OCAA Semi-Finals for the first time since the 2017-18 season, having last reached the gold medal game in 2016-17.

The Mountaineers will face the Fanshawe Falcons in the semi-final, with the game scheduled for February 28 at 5 p.m. in Ottawa, Ont.

The Matchup:

The Mountaineers advanced to the semi-finals after a dominant 65-51 road victory over the Georgian Grizzlies. Mohawk built a commanding 23-point lead at halftime, extending it to 29 with 45 seconds left in the third quarter. Despite some challenges in the fourth, including a strong 30-point effort from the Grizzlies, Mohawk held on to secure the win.

Fanshawe, meanwhile, is in the semi-final for the second time in the last three seasons but has not medalled since their back-to-back OCAA Championship wins in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

The Falcons have been strong on the road during these playoffs, first defeating the Seneca Sting in the qualifying round before pulling off an upset win over the OCAA West Division's top-seeded Niagara Knights.

Last Meeting:
Mohawk and Fanshawe have faced off twice in close contests this season. The Mountaineers won the season opener on October 19 at home, 74-73, while the Falcons took the February 5 matchup in overtime, 68-63.

In the Oct. 19 game, Mohawk led by eight heading into the fourth quarter. Fanshawe caught fire from beyond the arc, shooting five-of-nine in the final frame, but ultimately fell short of completing the comeback.

The Feb. 5 game saw the Mountaineers again leading going into the fourth, but Fanshawe rallied with a 23-10 run to force overtime. The Falcons outscored Mohawk 10-5 in the extra period to secure the win.
