Playoff Preview: No. 15 Mountaineers face No. 11 Hawks in OCAA Championship

OTTAWA, Ont. – The No. 15 nationally ranked Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team will go head-to-head with the No. 11 nationally ranked Humber Hawks for the OCAA Championship. This marks the sixth time in history the two teams will compete for gold.

The championship game is set for 5 p.m. on March 1 in Ottawa, Ont.

The Matchup:

Mohawk earned their spot in the final with a 69-60 win over the OCAA West Division fifth-seeded Fanshawe Falcons in the semi-final. The Mountaineers led for most of the game but had to fend off a couple of Falcon runs that brought the game within reach. Four Mohawk starters finished with 14 points each.

Humber advanced to the championship by defeating the No. 1 nationally ranked Algonquin Wolves 57-43. This is the sixth time in the past nine seasons that the Hawks have made it to the gold medal game, and they have won each of those six contests.

Last Meeting:

The Mountaineers and Hawks split their regular season series this year. Humber won 73-57 at home in October, while Mohawk returned the favor with a 74-60 victory on their home court in January.

Historically, Mohawk has struggled against Humber, with the Mountaineers failing to secure a win over the Toronto-based team since 2014 prior to last season. Mohawk's last appearance in the OCAA Championship was during the 2016-17 season, where they fell to the Hawks. Between 2015-17, the two teams met in the championship game for three consecutive years, with Humber emerging victorious each time.

In their five previous meetings for the provincial championship, Humber has won four times. Mohawk's sole victory over the Hawks came during the 1990-91 season—the last time the Mountaineers won OCAA gold.
