CCAA Quarter-Final Preview: No. 15 Mountaineers get rematch versus No. 3 Mariners

FREDERICTON, NB – In 2023, the Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball team hosted the CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship, opening tournament play with a quarter-final matchup against the VIU Mariners. Fast forward two years, and the No. 15 nationally ranked Mountaineers will once again face the No. 3 ranked Mariners in the quarter-final round.

The 2025 CCAA Women's Basketball National Championship will take place in Fredericton, NB, hosted by St. Thomas University. The Mountaineers and Mariners will kick off the tournament with a 12:00 p.m. (ET) game on March 12.

The Matchup:

The Mohawk Mountaineers wrapped up the 2024-25 regular season with an 11-5 record, finishing third in the OCAA West Division. In the OCAA playoffs, the Mountaineers defeated the Centennial Colts, Georgian Grizzlies, Fanshawe Falcons, and Humber Hawks to claim the conference championship. Throughout the four playoff games, Mohawk averaged 74.3 points per game while allowing 60.3 points per game.

VIU had an almost perfect regular season, posting a 21-1 record in the PACWEST conference. As the top team in their conference, the Mariners earned a bye to the semi-final round, where they defeated the Capilano Blues 67-53, before capturing the PACWEST championship with a 69-59 win over the Columbia Bible Bearcats. VIU has now won four of the last six PACWEST titles.

Last Meeting:

In the 2023 CCAA quarter-final, the Mountaineers fell to the Mariners 81-53. VIU went on to win the national championship that year.
