Mountaineers women’s basketball welcomes four new recruits for 2025-26 season

HAMILTON, Ont. – Following their first OCAA Championship title in 34 years, Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball head coach Mihai Raducnay has announced the signing of four new recruits for the 2025-26 season.

Leading the recruiting group are collegiate transfers Joanna Smith (Simcoe, Ont.) and Sydney Drain (Tweed, Ont.), along with local high school talents Megan Fox (Hamilton, Ont.) and Cassidy Gurman (Hamilton, Ont.).

Smith arrives at Mohawk after two seasons (2023-25) with the Fanshawe Falcons, where she played in 32 games. Averaging 21.3 minutes per game, she contributed 8.2 points and 1.6 steals. In six playoff appearances, she increased her scoring average to 10.8 points.

"I missed out on Joanna the first time when she came out of high school," said Raducanu. "She's going to bring instant energy on both ends of the floor as we prepare to defend our championship. Joanna thrives the open court, and her speed and agility, in my opinion, makes her one of the best in the OCAA."

Drain transfers from the Redeemer Royals, where she led her team in scoring during the 2024-25 season with 12.4 points per game. Over two seasons (2023-25), she appeared in 27 games, averaging 11.4 points, 3.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals.

"It's rare to find a seasoned leader who truly understands what it takes to compete at the OCAA level," said Raducanu. "Sydney is aggressive, competitive and unafraid to tell it how it is. Her performance in the OCAA West over the past two seasons speaks volumes."

Fox joins the program from St. Jean de Brebeuf Catholic Secondary School and will bolster Mohawk's backcourt depth.

"I'm very excited for this addition," said Raducanu. "She's one of the top point guards coming out of JUEL this year. She brings a high basketball IQ, sharp shooting and strong defensive instincts."

Gurman, a graduate of Bernie Custis Secondary School, adds further guard depth on the wing.

"Cassidy is a gritty Hamilton baller with a raw skill set and huge potential," said Raducanu. "She's made for this game, and her energy is a perfect fit for our team."

All four recruits will begin their academic and athletic careers at Mohawk in September.
