Women’s basketball adds pair of out-of-province recruits

HAMILTON, Ont. – Mohawk Mountaineers women's basketball head coach Mihai Raducanu has announced the addition of two out-of-province transfer recruits for the upcoming season.

Vanessa Soffee, from Fredericton, N.B., made her official commitment to Mohawk College during a campus visit in early June. Joining her is Jenna Griffin, a native of Port Moody B.C., who will arrive in Hamilton for the Fall.

Soffee joins the Mountaineers after four seasons with the St. Thomas University Tommies of the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA). Between 2018 and 2023, she appeared in 68 games, averaging 9.8 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 3.1 steals per game.

The talented point guard racked up several accolades during her time at St. Thomas. She was named ACAA Rookie of the Year in her first season and went on to earn three CCAA Academic All-Canadian honours. Soffee was also selected three times as an ACAA First Team All-Conference player and was a two-time ACAA Defensive Player of the Year. Her standout 2019-20 season saw her named both ACAA Player of the Year and St. Thomas Female Athlete of the Year.

"Vanessa is bringing her game to the OCAA after a very successful career in the ACAA," said Raducanu. "I am excited for her to showcase her elite defensive skills. She's a great fit for us at point guard."

Griffin comes to Mohawk after playing from 2021 to 2025 with the Capilano University Blues in the PacWest Conference. Over 45 games, she averaged 9.3 points and 1.1 steals per game while hitting 63 three-pointers. During the 2021-22 season, she averaged a career-best 11.3 points per game and was named a PacWest Second Team All-Star and CCAA Academic All-Canadian.

"I'm excited to have Jenna join our squad and bring the West Coast swagger to Hamilton," Raducanu said. "She is a leader on the court, a true point guard, and her accomplishments speak for themselves."

This fall, Soffee will be studying Community and Justice Services, while Griffin is enrolled in the Occupational Therapist Assistant and Physiotherapist Assistant program.
