The Mohawk Mountaineers 2011-2012 men’s basketball team completed a feat that continues to stand alone in its program history. With Brian Jonker as head coach, the 2011-12 team achieved an OCAA Gold Medal and the programs first CCAA Championship. The OCAA Gold ended a 40-year drought for Mohawk’s basketball program.
It was a true underdog story for the Mohawk team. At the conclusion of the OCAA regular season the Mountaineers hosted a 13-5 record, which was fourth-best out of the West Region. They did, however, have the best offense in the OCAA with 1544 points scored in 18 games. To claim OCAA Gold Mohawk had a path that featured the top seeded teams in the conference. In the quarter-final round the Mountaineers outlasted the East Regions one seeded Centennial Colts, and two rounds later playing for gold, Mohawk carried momentum past the West Regions number one seeded Humber Hawks.
At the CCAA Championship tournament the Mountaineers received the fourth seed, and similar to the provincial tournament they would again need to beat the top two teams. After an opening round win versus Vanier College, Mohawk would face the underdog adversity versus the number one seeded University of Northern BC. The Mountaineers would continue to show their resilience with a 78-71 win to advance to the National title game. In the Championship, Mohawk challenged the two seeded Mount Royal University, pulling off an 88-73 win for CCAA Gold.
